NexTec in the News: Choosing the Right Accounting Software

Accounting software affects every facet of your business. Choosing the right accounting software solution can be a game-changer, providing a platform for growth and positively impacting your entire operation for years to come. The NexTec Group’s Chris Farrell, Vice President, Sage X3 recently sat down with the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Gene Marks, CPA to share his expert insights and tips on how to navigate this crucial decision.

While online reviews and speaking with industry peers can be helpful, one key takeaway for business owners is the importance of working with an implementation partner, Farrell emphasizes:

“You ultimately want somebody that is familiar with your business processes. A good partner always has best practices and can help you best understand the strengths and weaknesses of the accounting software you’re evaluating.”

When evaluating accounting or ERP software, don’t skimp on demos. Involve key team members and run through real-life scenarios to ensure the software meets your specific needs.

Farrell notes that transparency from vendors is crucial:

“A vendor may not be able to check all the boxes, but they should be prepared to show why their software solves problems that are unique to their customers’ businesses.”

Another recommendation is to consider industry-specific solutions, as different sectors have unique requirements that an ‘off-the-shelf’ software solution may not address out of the box. Implementation partners with deep industry experience can be invaluable in this process.

“Having a partner that was a former controller or a plant or project manager in your industry is invaluable,” Farrell tells Marks. “They’ve walked the walk.”

Ultimately, Farrell reminds business leaders that choosing accounting software isn’t just about bookkeeping or basic accounting functions:

“The biggest thing that businesses need to be concerned about when evaluating a new accounting system is to identify the key areas of the company where it will be used the most. Most of the systems available today can do the accounting work, which is why it’s important to focus on the processes in your business that are unique and figure out how the software will work with — or even change — them.”
